Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage Therapy dates back to over 3000 years ago. Hot Stone Massage Therapy is also known as Hot Rock Massage Therapy and was used in ancient India and China, and more recently to the North American Indians and even more recently has become popular in countries such as Australia.

The hot stones are usually made of basalt, a black volcanic rock that is rich in iron, so they absorb and retain heat well. River rocks are normally used because they are so smooth - they have been smoothed over time by the river's current.

The stones are immersed in water and heated in an electric heating device until they are within a certain temperature range, usually 50 - 65 degrees celsius. The stones may be placed at specific points on the back, in the palms of the hand, or between the toes.

This ancient massage technique utilises the benefits of thermotherapy. Hot stones are gently placed on energy or ‘chakra’ points during the treatment and are used on the body during the massage to provide deep muscular stress relief.

Hot Stone massage therapy combines the benefits of hydrotherapy and thermalism (or thermotherapy – the use of heat applications) with the strokes of massage using Stones to create a deep, relaxing and healing treatment.  The heat of the massage stones warms the skin, which allows for the absorption of moisturizing and therapeutic oils, while simultaneously preparing the musculature of the body so the massage therapist can work into the deeper muscle layers.

Heated stone treatment goes beyond the physical and allows you to enter a deeper sense of relaxation, health and well being. The penetrating heat from the stones relaxes muscles, allowing trigger points to dissolve and fade with minimum effort. The hot stone massage is deeply relaxing; its warmth calms and soothes. This massage induces a state of serenity, calm and peace. It soothes stiff muscles, improves blood and lymphatic circulation, stimulates the flow of vital energies and eliminates toxins from the body.

Some of the benefits include relief of chronic pain, relaxation and stress reduction, anxiety and tension, detoxification of the body, poor circulation, osteoarthritis and arthritis pain, insomnia, depression and relief of neck and back pain.
