Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is young sprouted wheat (Triticum aestivum). Wheatgrass reaches its nutritional peak just prior to a period known as the jointing stage (when the internodal tissue in the grass leaf begins to elongate and forms a stem). After this stage rapid growth begins and the nutrients stored in the leaves of the plant are passed along to wheat grain.

Wheat grass can be traced back in history at least 5000 years to ancient Egypt and possibly even early Mesopotamian civilizations. It is thought that ancient Egyptians prized the young leafy blades of wheat for their positive affect on health and vitality.

In the 1930's an American agricultural chemist, Dr. Charles F Schnabel, noted that ailing hens fed fresh, young wheatgrass recovered quickly. They also grew faster and had double the fertility compared with healthy hens fed standard diets. This discovery became the impetus for a lifetime of research into the reason for this amazing result. Joined by others, such as biochemist George Kohler, his passion inspired a body of scientific research that continues today.

In recent years the benefits of sprouted foods have become more well known. Sprouts are full of nutrients and are easily digested and absorbed by the body. Wheatgrass is another sprouted food and has been shown to be extremely beneficial in healing the body and in maintaining health.

Wheatgrass can be taken internally as shots, tablets or powder and wheatgrass preparations can be applied externally as a balm or cream. In the case of the Dr Wheatgrass products, they have been prepared by a qualified medical doctor who became disillusioned with the ineffectiveness of modern drugs. His incredible success with wheatgrass led him to establish a company to produce pure and effective wheatgrass preparations.

Taken internally, wheatgrass can provide many of the vitamins and minerals essential to good health. Applied externally, wheatgrass can help cure wounds and injuries rapidly. Best of all, unlike with modern drugs, adverse side-effects are virtually non-existent!

Wheat grass is sometimes combined with other nutrient-rich superfoods such as barley grass, chlorella and spirulina.
